At AS: K-12
(1957-70); born in Manila
Favorite teacher:
Mr. Adonay (Latin), who was able to make a
potentially very boring subject very enjoyable through the sheer force
of his personality.
Favorite class:
Speech, with Mrs. Williams.
Steve doesn't recall if his team prevailed in the "Legalize
Marijuana" debate in front of the high school, but he made good use
of speech and debating techniques during his student activist
days in college and as editor of his college newspaper. (Today, his favorite job duty is
speaking at conferences.)
School story:
One day in Kindergarten (or possibly first grade), Steve was part of a
group chasing
down the class bully during recess because the teacher wanted him for
some infraction.
After JK was cornered, he brandished a large rock
and threatened to throw it at anyone who came any
closer. After telling JK that he was bluffing because hurting
anyone would mean really big trouble, Steve stepped towards JK...
Steve doesn't remember the rock's impact on his forehead, only that he was
suddenly on his back with a throbbing head pain! It may have been
Steve's first "lost bet," but it didn't deter him from
continuing to take calculated risks. (He just does more calculating
now...!)
Colleges:
Florida Presbyterian (now Eckerd)
College
Univ. of Florida (M.A., Public
Administration)
Now:
Grant Manager
Florida Dept. of Community Affairs
Small Cities Community Development Grants
