At AS: 1-12 (1962-74) Favorite teachers: I had lots of favorite teachers, starting with Ms. Tubangi in 4th grade and ending with Dr. "Dups" de los Reyes in 12th grade. I thought Ms. Tubangi was very pretty, and funny, too, and she had an innovative method for keeping us engaged in her classroom. I thought "Dups" was extremely knowledgable about literature and writing. So much so that I signed up for many of the electives he taught because I learned interesting things about Shakespeare, and Elizabethan England, and writing precise essays. Favorite Class: I had the same Spanish teacher for Spanish I studied as much as the next guy, but I was never fluent and
sometimes was completely lost, like when we were reading Don Quixote and
I didn't have a clue what it was about until she showed some clips from a
black-and-white movie about it in Spanish. That's when I learned the real
beauty of Dulcinea and I "got it" - the metaphor about chasing windmills. I enjoyed playing badminton, bowling, and Going swimming at SeaFront and hanging out at the Teen Center there was just too cool for words. I made a lot of good friends there, going on the beach trips to Nasubgbu & Matabunkay, and carrying on in the Teen Center. I remember this one time when Melinda Collins (my girlfriend for 2 years when I was in 10th and Well, we were talking about balut with a bunch of people, and for some stupid reason I thought I'd buy a balut and give it a try, besides, Melinda had never seen one up close before. So anyway, I brought it on the bus, and sat down in the aisle seat next to her. Within a few seconds the pungent odor was too overpowering for her, and she crinkled up her nose in feigned disgust. I figured the only gentlemanly thing to do was to throw it out the window, so I quickly tossed it out what I thought was the open window right next to Melinda. Silly me, the window was up, not down, so the balut spread all over the window. Needless to say, it reeked for the rest of the trip, which did not endear me to either Teen Center beach goers or my girlfriend. It was a long time before I lived down that humiliation. Note to self: always check to see if a vehicle's window is open before chucking unmentionables outside, or better yet, never litter and never chuck things out vehicle windows!!
