Jeepney Jeopardy Begins

After playing (and some singing) of the Philippine national anthem, the contest began.  Not just alums showed interest... a Filipino wedding party in the hotel was soon taping the event from their second floor balcony until the wedding began.

(Appropriately, the background music is a traditional Filipino folk dance - "Aray" (Ouch)

Sige na....! "Alex" explains the rules And the answer is...

One of the most memorable moments came when Rich Guardian '73 protested another team's answer (in the "View It" category) to the question "how does a Pinoy sit when there is no chair" on the grounds that  the visual failed to include crotch scratching.  To the howls of the alums, Rich then jumped on the table and proceeded to demonstrate an "authentic" squat....but the ruling awarded the points to the other team despite vociferous alum support for Rich's... "position."

Another crowd favorite was in "Tagalog-English" word play:  an orange-flavored powdered drink mix, "mother" in Tagalog, and one of the Three Stooges.  The answer came swiftly - Tang ina moe !

In Round 2, the first place Huks struggled to stay ahead of the surging Tasaday and Igorots... Round 2 ended with the Tasaday & Igorots tied for first, followed by Huks and Moros Moros display confidence that they can win it all with a comeback in Final Jeopardy

When Round 2 ended with the Igorots and Tasaday tied at 14,000 followed by the Huks (11,000) and the Moros (8,000), it was still possible for any team to win it all in Final Jeopardy.... if one  team wagered everything and only it had the correct answer.  A correct answer by even only the last place Moros would give them 16,000 to 14,000 for the two first place teams even if they wagered nothing.  So, it all came down to this one Final Jeepney Jeopardy question: where were the AS graduation ceremonies held in 1943 and 1944?  Amazingly, this apparent "give away" question was answered correctly by only one team....and the Tasaday swept to victory with "Santo Tomas internment camp."  Time for the awards....!

After Jeepney Jeopardy, alums were treated to a uniquely Filipino culinary demonstration when J. P. DeMyer '72 showed how to eat balut (which Michelle Palmer just happened to have brought.)
